As the cycling season hit full stride in June, so did our bike safety educators! Here’s a sample of some of their activities.
In the Rochester area, Regional Coordinators Karen Rogers and Jesse Peers were busy! Karen made presentations at the New Life Fellowship and Antioch Baptist Church, while Jesse is active with classes at the University of Rochester and the Rochester Public Market. Both Jesse and Karen also participate in the weekly Unity Ride.
In Syracuse, Safety Ambassador Glenn Allen conducted a safety briefing at the annual Bike for Brady charity ride, with around 100 riders involved.
Close to 200 riders in the Hudson Valley were given safety tips and safe riding principles by Deputy Education Director Tom Polk, speaking at the 13th annual Tour De Kingston ride.
Long Island’s two Safety Ambassadors, Cathy Cavaliere-Ardle and Steve Woloschin, engaged recreational riders and third-grade children in June. Cathy did helmet checks and distributed Pocket Guides to 400 riders in the Nassau-Suffolk Bike Challenge at Harry Tappan Marina in Sea Cliff, while Steve presented to four third-grade classes at the Clayton Huey elementary school in Center Moriches.
On a visit to Jamestown in Western New York, Education Director Ken Crandall trained local volunteers and participated in the Beer and Bike Bonanza Ride. He also participated at a benefit hosted by Brazil Craft Beers and Winery and New Belgium Beers which raised $500 for NYBC.
In Albany, Ken taught the first of four bike education classes sponsored by CDPHP Cycle, the Capital Region bike-share program. Also in the area, Ken debuted the AT&T #ItCanWait Distracted Driving Simulator and spoke about safer cycling practices at the inaugural Niskayuna Bike-Ped Fair.
